For fiends and foes of horror- and dark comedies. A discussion of the twisted and sometimes shocking relationship between humor and horror in the movies...

Help us out... we watched ARSENIC AND OLD LACE the other night for the upteenth time and loved it all over again. There's just something about a good dark comedy that hits us in the right spot and ARSENIC... is one of the best.

We figure we can't be the only ones who enjoy the co-mingling of the dark and the humourous in the cinema: from subtle winks (remember in Hitchcock's THE BIRDS, the pair of lovebirds swaying back and forth in unison as Tippi Hendren raced up the winding coast road) to lively parody (where YOUNG FRANKENSTEINS's Monster is presented to the scientific community with a little dance number called "Puttin' on the Ritz") and all the gross out stuff inbetween (anything from RE-ANIMATOR or EVIL DEAD II comes to mind).

Oh, we know some people will argue horror-comedies are generally neither scary enough or funny enough. We would counter horror and humor have gone hand in hand almost from the beginning and without the release valve provided by laughter, horror becomes too oppressive for most audiences. What do you think?
