Group Leader:

My thanks to the members of the group. And thanks to whoever added the stem cell image - I often neglect that kind of stuff - perhaps now you could help me with my profile - ha.

This group will discuss the state of and advances in adult stem cell research and therapies which use the cells of living donors. Progress in this field has been underreported in the media.

This group will not discuss the relative ethical merits of adult vs. embryonic stem cell therapy and research. That is best accomplished in other groups.

Most of the short-term goals of the group have been accomplished. I have covered Heart Disease, Diabetes, Liver Disease, Spinal Cord Injury, Multiple Sclerosis.

I would still like to cover more autoimmune type illnesses like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, chrone's disease, etc. And also Parkinson's, Alzheimers, muscular distrophy, and macular degeneration.

Each topic covers a different treatment or study, or gives an overview of some type. The topics are organized as follows:

I. HEART DISEASE
The progress in treating heart disease using adult stem cells has been amazing. Very successful treatments are being offered commercially overseas. Additionally, numerous phase I clinical trials have or are being conducted, and venture capital is pouring into this particular area.

The approaches generally involve the injection of marrow derived adult stem cells either directly into the heart, into the coronary arteries, or into the general blood stream. The treatment appears particularly important for those suffering from idiopathic dialated cardiomyopathy, since these patients have few, if any other treatment options to reverse the course of the disease.

Bangkok Thailand. Adult stem Cell Therapy using patient blood sample For Severe Heart Disease – Theravitae. The Treatment Don Ho just received.

HEART DISEASE. EARLY CLINICAL TRIAL. INJECTION ADULT MARROW STEM CELLS. ST. ELIZABETH'S MEDICAL CENTER.

Pittsburg – Phase I Trial to Treat Heart Patients using adult stem cells from bone marrow at University of Pittsburg Medical Center by Dr. Patel.

HEART DISEASE. PHASE I TRIAL CASE WESTERN UNIVERSITY UNDER DR. POMPILI USING ARTERIOCYTE MARROW DERIVED ADULT STEM CELLS

II. DIABETES
The progress with diabetes is also dramatic, although somewhat behind heart disease.

There are several tracks being pursued:
1) Regenerate Pancreatic Beta Cells using Adult Stem Cells Taken from the patient's own bone marrow.

2) Regenerate Pancreatic Beta Cells using Umbilical Cord Blood Adult Stem Cells.

3) Regenerate Pancreatic Beta Cells using Pancreatic Adult Stem Cells.

4) Destroy the bodies immune system attack on pancreatic beta cells, and then either regenerate them with added adult stem cells - or allow the body's own pancreatic stem cells to generate them on its own.

The topics are as follows:

TYPE II DIABETES TREATED WITH MARROW STEM CELLS IN ARGENTINA
85% of 16 patients able to discard insulin/medication.

TREATMENT OF TYPE I DIABETES USING ADULT STEM CELLS – GENERAL INFORMATION
Mouse studies indicate that beta cells can be regenerated in the pancrease by injecting marrow derived adult stem cells. There has also been some research into using pancreatic adult stem cells to regenerate beta cells – that has not been totally promising and hence some have simply concluded that no adult stem cells can be used to regenerate the beta cells, which is incorrect. At Harvard, they tested a chemotherapy compound (tumor neucrosis factor) and found that it destroyed the parts of the immune system that are responsible for attacking beta cells in some diabetes.Harvard – Tumor Neucrosis Factor.

DR HAN HOON (HISTOSTEM) TREATS DIABETES WITH UCB STEM CELLS
Reports 70% success rate treating diabetes mellitus.

III. LIVER DISEASE
Progress has also been excellent on liver disease. The approach is to transplant marrow derived or umbilical cord blood adult stem cells into the damaged and failing liver. A phase II trial is nearing completion in the UK.

The topics are as follows:

TREATEMENT OF LIVER DISEASE USING MARROW DERIVED STEM CELLS AT HAMMERSTEIN HOSPITAL IN WEST LONDON UNDER SURGEON HABIB.

DR HAN HOON (HISTOSTEM) OF S. KOREA TREATS CIRROSIS OF THE LIVER USING UCB DERIVED STEM CELLS

IV. MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. GENERAL DISCUSSION

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. EARLY STAGE RRMS. ALL SPMS. PHASE II CLINICAL TRIALS USING TOVAXIN FROM BIOTECH COMPANY PHARMAFRONTIERS

V. SPINAL CORD INJURY

Spinal cord injury treatments have been concentrated on three types: The first involves adult stem cells taken from the umbilical cord blood of newly delivered babies. The second involves stem cells taken from the nose, where nerve cells associated with the sense of smell continue to generate throghout a persons life (this is why you regain your sense of smell after you lose it from a cold). The third involves the use of treated macrophages - the macrophage approach only works in the first 10 or 15 days after injury occurs.

The topics are arranged as follows:

Dr Han Hoon Treats SCI's in South Korea using UCB derived Adult Stem Cells

Australin Phase I Trials Nasal Stem Cell Transplants for SCI's

Nasal Stem Cell Therapy Conducted by Dr. Lima in Portugal

Russian Nasal Stem Cell Treatments

Nasal Stem Cell Therapy. Phase I Trial being conducted in UK by Dr. Raismann.

Phase II Study For SCI Injuries UNDER 15 DAYS OLD

New Zealand Phase I Clinical Trials Nasal Stem Cell Transplants

*****************
In the medium term a goal of this group will be to attempt to locate sources of funding for experimental procedures for those who can't afford it or whose insurance is balking at paying for it.

There will be zero tolerence in this group for those promoting bands, their webcams, pornography, get rich schemes, etc... Discussions are expected to be respectful of all members.

There will be an effort to keep Forums and the like uncluttered so that those who need to aquire important information won't need to wade through uninformative comentary and posts.
