Biography:
Clayton Allen Hensley...signed by scout Tom Korenek (Giants)...was a center fielder at Pearland High School before attending Lamar College in Texas...went 8-6 with a 2.97 ERA and set a single-season school record with 127 strikeouts in 100.0 innings pitched to help Lamar post a 38-24 record in 2002...the ace on the team, Hensley was named Louisville Slugger’s National Player Week on May 13, striking out a then season-high 15 batters over 7.1 innings of work in Lamar’s 10-3 win at Nicholls St. on May 11...his 15 strikeouts vs. Nicholls St. tied the school single-game record which was shared by Randy Williams and Linc Mikkelsen...helped guide the squad to the Southland Conference (SLC) championship and advance to the NCAA Regional at Austin... set a new Lamar single-game and an SLC Tournament single-game record by striking out 17 Texas-Arlington batters in the Cardinals 5-3 win on May 22...struck out two in 1.0 inning of work to earn the save in Lamar’s 5-4 victory over Northwestern State in the SLC Tournament championship game and went on to earn the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award with his tournament-record 19 strikeouts.

SUMMARY: Made the Major League Opening Day roster for the first time in his career...went 11-12 with a 3.71 ERA (77 ER/187.0 IP), setting career highs in wins, games (37), games started (29), and innings pitched...started the season in the bullpen and made eight relief appearances, going 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA (7 ER/10.0 IP) in those games...made his first start of 2006 on April 18, tossing 4.1 innings of one-run ball at Colorado...compiled a 3-1 record with a 2.93 ERA (13 ER/40.0 IP) in six starts in May...allowed only one earned run over a 21.0-inning span from the fourth inning of his August 9 start at New York (NL) through his Aug. 26 start at Colorado...lowered his ERA from 4.33 to 3.94 over the four-game stretch...threw a careerhigh 4.0 innings of relief Aug. 20 vs. Arizona, striking out four while allowing one unearned run.
KEEPING IT IN THE PARK: Did not allow a home run in seven consecutive outings (six starts) from July 23- Aug. 26...a span of 41.1 innings without surrendering a long ball.

SITTING ’EM DOWN: Set his single-game career-high by striking out nine Sept. 24 vs. Pittsburgh...his 122 strikeouts placed third on the Padres behind Jake Peavy (215) and Chris Young (164).

GOING THE DISTANCE: Hensley tossed his first complete- game shutout May 14 at Chicago (NL)...held the Cubs scoreless on two hits over 9.0 innings...also tied a Major League record (9.0-inning game) by striking out five times at the plate...became the first player to strike out five times and toss a complete game in the same outing since Bert Blyleven did it with Pittsburgh on July 29, 1979.

PLAYOFF PROWESS: Tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in the 2006 Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals...appeared in two games, allowing two hits and a walk.
