Group Leader:

East London's primary boating community in Docklands.

Poplar dock was originally built as a regulating reservoir to maintain the water level in the West India Docks. In 1833 it was used as a timber pond. In 1877 the western dock was constructed to become the destination of colliers carrying coal from Durham and the North East. The North London railway established its depot here and operated the distribution. Opened officially 9th June 99 by Her Majesty the Queen... She arrived on a boat and was met by MP Jim Fitzpatrick, Tower Hamlets deputy mayor Denise Jones and the Local Residents Association.

The Dock is now home to a strong and vibrant community of boat dwellers from all walks of life. We are currently concerned with Crossrail's plans to cut off access via the waterways to and from the dock. This would cause a major impact on our lives and we are, as a community, seeking mutually beneficial solutions with Crossrail and the Parliamentary Committee assigned to this Bill.
