Our Issue—Education For All: Each year, the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) organizes Global Action Week to increase awareness of the plight of those who miss out on the chance that an education gives them in life. Unable to read, write, or count, they cannot defend their rights and are often trapped in a lifetime of poverty.
In 2000 in Dakar, Senegal, as part of the Education for All Goals and later as part of the Millennium Development Goals, over 180 nations committed to the goal of education for all children by 2015. Yet, this year, at the half-way mark, the world is still far off track. Today 72 million primary school-aged children and 226 million secondary school-aged children are out of school. Additionally, there are 750 million illiterate adults. The majority of those who are out of school or illiterate are girls and women. We are inviting students all over the United States to learn about these issues so that they can talk to their government representatives, both locally and in Washington DC, about the great challenge of achieving universal quality basic education. To find out more about the issue, visit the Global Campaign for Education’s Action Week website at www.campaignforeducationusa.org/actionweek.
